Once the very first personal computers were introduced, everyone was in shock. Taking something that once took up several rooms worth of space and making it available to the public was a magnificent feat.
The new personal computers, far from taking up the space of several rooms, were so tiny that they could easily be placed on a desk or table.
It was really amazing at the time and some people were so in awe of this incredible technology that they were even a bit frightened. Scared that computers would someday become self-aware and take over the world. Luckily, that hasn’t been the case. And eventually people were interested in making not just smaller computers, but portable ones as well.
Then in the early 1980, the first laptop was introduced from Compaq. The actual word "laptop" was first used later that same year by the creators of the Gavilan SC, a battery powered laptop. Later that same year, Tandy introduced a lower price model which brought the power of laptops to many more offices and homes across the country. Since then, even smaller, much more powerful laptops have been introduced.
The invention of Desktop RAID and other storage solutions have increased the power of PCs and laptops. Lithium technological developments have done even more to affect the power of laptops and other portable devices. And with the fast-pace of IT today, there is surely more coming our way soon.
We've come along way since the first computers filled an entire room. Even video games today are much more powerful than the original computers were when they were first invented. One of the most impressive things about technology is how it continues to get smaller and smaller. And in addition to the size changes, the jobs change. The way we conduct our business is also changing.
Many people can conduct all their business online. In fact, they can use their cell phones just like a computer. As businesses grown so does the need to store the data for that business.
This is another area where technology has changed the way we keep our data safe. Instead of needing a forest of trees to keep our data safe, we can now store our data on servers or RAID and JBOD systems. Keeping up with technology is almost an impossiblility. However, it is quite a rid to watch it grow and change, isn't it?
